This course, the second about Shinran, goes deeper into his development and how his path founded a new Buddhist practice. Shinran (1173-1263) was born in the Japanese medieval time, 850 years ago, and became the recognized founder of Jodo Shinshu called Shin Buddhism in the West, He rejected the path of a Tendai Monk, became a disciple of Honen, and embraced a radical new direction of Buddhism in that era; Pure Land Buddhism focused on this world rather than future worlds. Shinran dedicated himself to giving hope to those who thought they were hopeless and expresses gratitude for the compassion that supports us in this life.

Resident Minister at Orange County Buddhist Church. Born and raised in the Shin Buddhist tradition, educated in Kyoto, Japan. Was a trade and finance professional. Changed career midlife. Received a Ph.D. in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, ordained at the Nishi Hongwangi in Kyoto, Japan and is a Research Fellow and Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Buddhist Studies (IBS).
