This is the first of two courses which will explore the work of Joseph Campbell (1904-1987), the famed Folklorist and Mythologist. His 1988 PBS documentary Power of Myth with Bill Moyers is still "one of the most popular series in the history of American public television". Our first course will focus on the purpose of myth; the second on the power of myth. This helps us better appreciate the Buddhist canon which often contains content which is non-literal, mythic, and metaphoric in nature. Joseph Campbell has also been an influence on pop culture, including both George Lucas’ original Star Wars films and the entire franchise itself.
