The Sutras are filled with both history and metaphor. One confusing aspect is that Shakyamuni underwent two awakenings; the first under the Bodhi tree at 35 years old and the second under the twin sala trees before his death at 80. How can awakening occur both during one’s life and also at the end of one’s life? Different Buddhist practices maintain somewhat different interpretations. In this course, we will explore The Two Nirvana Theory as a means to successful navigate these two seemingly conflicting events that Buddhists call "awakening".
